When to Visit Sri Lanka: A Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting opposite coasts. Here's how to plan around them.

Ceylon Essence Editorial · 2026-04-27

The short answer: November through April for the south and west coasts and the cultural triangle, May through September for the east coast and Trincomalee. Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island, which is unusual — it means there's almost always a coast that's having perfect weather.

The two monsoons in plain English

The southwest monsoon (Yala) brings rain to the south and west coasts and the hill country from roughly May to September. The northeast monsoon (Maha) brings rain to the east coast and the Jaffna peninsula from roughly October to January. There are inter-monsoonal periods in October and April with thunderstorms most afternoons.

Month by month

Highland mornings run cold in every month of the year.

Our recommendation

If you can travel in late November or early February, do. The weather is at its best, the coast is dry, and you'll avoid the Christmas/New Year price spike.

What about the hill country?

Nuwara Eliya, Ella, and the tea estates sit at 1,500–2,000 metres and have their own microclimate. Pack a light jacket year-round — mornings are cool. The hill country is technically driest from January to March but it can rain at any time of year.

World's End clears before nine, then the cloud closes it for the day.

What is the best month to visit Sri Lanka?

December to March suits most journeys: the west and south coasts are dry, the highlands are clear in the mornings, and the whale boats run. The east coast's season is roughly May to September.

When is whale watching season in Mirissa?

November to April, with the calmest seas usually December to March. Boats rarely run in the southwest monsoon.

Is there a bad time to visit?

No month is empty, but October's inter-monsoon rains are the least predictable. Wildlife parks and Sinharaja work year-round with the right expectations.
