A short coast, taken at its own pace. Three nights on the southern shore, where the day is shaped by the tide and the boat that goes out before light. You watch for the blue whale in the morning and walk a Dutch fort in the evening. Nothing is crammed in. The point of a short journey is to do a few things well, and to leave the rest of the time to the sea.
From USD 1,150 per person, two sharing. USD 2,300 for two travellers. Half board · twin/double.

Day by day
Day 1 · Arrival, down to the coast
Colombo › Mirissa · ≈ 3 hours
Met at the airport and driven south along the coast road to Mirissa. In the late afternoon, a short stop at the stilt fishermen of Weligama — a coastal ritual older than any hotel on this shore. Then the beach, and the sound of it. An early night, because the best of tomorrow happens before breakfast.
A boat leaves Mirissa harbour before the wind gets up. This is one of the few places on earth where the blue whale — the largest animal that has ever lived — feeds close to shore. Spinner dolphins travel in the hundreds, breaching in silhouette against the low sun; a sperm whale or a lone olive ridley turtle is not unusual. Storm petrels skim the swell. Back by late morning, the rest of the day is yours.
A slow morning by the sea, watching the traditional oru fishermen work their outrigger canoes just beyond the surf. In the late afternoon, Galle Fort: a seventeenth-century rampart town the Dutch built and the British kept, its clock tower rising above a grid of lanes now full of small shops and old houses. The light on the walls at sunset is the reason to come late.
A last slow morning by the sea, then the drive back up the coast to the airport in the afternoon.

Good to know
Blue whale watching off Mirissa is at its best from November to April. Sightings are by nature unpredictable and the boat is weather dependent; should conditions be unsafe the trip is rescheduled within the journey.
An early start is needed on the whale-watching morning, usually around 06:00.
