The nocturnal island. Ten days.
10 Days / 9 Nights
An island most people miss, because they sleep through it. Ten days walking, listening, and waiting in the dark — for the loris, the frog, the turtle, and the whale at first light.
Most of Sri Lanka's wildlife is busy when the lights go out, and almost no one is there to see it. This journey is built around that hour. You ride out into Wilpattu after dark for nightjars, owls, fishing cats and the eyeshine of the gray loris; you kneel in a Sinharaja rainforest loud with frogs found nowhere else; you stand on a quiet south-coast beach as a green turtle hauls up to nest; and you go out at first light off Mirissa for the blue whale on the deep blue. A naturalist who knows the night travels with you. A good torch is the only thing you need to bring.
From USD 2,800 per person, two sharing. USD 5,600 for two travellers. Half board · twin/double.
Colombo wetlands · ≈ 1 hour
Met at the airport in the evening and taken the short distance to a quiet lodge on the edge of a wetland. If you are not too far gone, a first short walk after dinner: the eyeshine of a palm civet, perhaps a fishing cat on the paddy edge, the churr of a nightjar. An easy start to a journey that keeps unusual hours.

Colombo › Wilpattu · ≈ 4 hours
North to Wilpattu, the island's largest national park and a mosaic of villu lakes, dry forest and scrub. Settle into a tented camp on the park edge, then out after dark for the first night drive: nightjars on the track, owls in the canopy, snakes warm on the road, and the nocturnal mammals this country is quietly famous for — gray slender loris, fishing cat, jungle cat, river otter, jackal, all four deer species, porcupine, and on a good night an elephant moving through the brush.
Overnight: Mahoora Tented Camp · Wilpattu · Half Board
Wilpattu
A full day in the park: out at first light, back to camp through the heat of the middle hours, and another long afternoon drive. The villus draw everything — elephant, sambar, sloth bear, the occasional leopard at the water. After dinner, a second night drive, working different tracks for whatever the night turns up.
Overnight: Mahoora Tented Camp · Wilpattu · Half Board
Wilpattu
A second full day of safari, going further in and working the quieter corners. Take the night off: a long dinner under canvas, a hot shower, and an early bed. The forest will still be loud around you; you just won't be in it.
Overnight: Mahoora Tented Camp · Wilpattu · Half Board
Wilpattu › Sinharaja · ≈ 6 hours
A long drive south and inland to Sinharaja, the island's last great stretch of lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Arrive in the afternoon and find your feet. After dinner, an evening walk on the tracks around the hotel — owls calling from the canopy, snakes on the wet leaves, amphibians underfoot, and if you are lucky the red slender loris in the torch beam.
Overnight: Jansen's Bungalow · Sinharaja · Half Board
Sinharaja
By day, the endemics: the blue magpie, the malkoha, a slow walk with eyes up. By night, the reason you came. Sri Lanka has more than a hundred frog species and most live nowhere else on earth; after rain the leaf litter is full of them. A night walk on the tracks around the hotel for owls, snakes, amphibians, and the red slender loris by the shine of its eyes.
Overnight: Jansen's Bungalow · Sinharaja · Half Board
Sinharaja
A flexible day, shaped by how the night before ran. Either deeper into Sinharaja for what you didn't find, or a gentler day on the forest edge and through a nearby village, where the rainforest meets the lives that have grown up alongside it. After dark, a night drive for owls, snakes, amphibians and another chance at the loris.
Overnight: Jansen's Bungalow · Sinharaja · Half Board
Sinharaja › Rekawa / Tangalle · ≈ 3 hours
Down to the south coast and a long quiet beach where green turtles have come ashore to nest for longer than anyone has kept count. The afternoon is the sea. Sunset on the sand. After dark, with a local conservation ranger, you wait above the tide line for a female to haul up, dig, and lay. No lights, no noise. Only the sound of it.
Overnight: Sooriya Resort & Spa · Tangalle · Half Board
Mirissa › Galle · ≈ 1.5 hours
Out of the harbour at Mirissa before sunrise for the blue whale on the deep blue. Spinner dolphins on the bow, flying fish, and if the day is yours the largest animal that has ever lived rising for breath beside the boat. Back ashore for a slow lunch, then west to Galle. The Dutch fort by late afternoon, the ramparts at sunset, a long dinner inside the walls.
Overnight: Landesi · Galle Fort · Half Board
Galle › Colombo · ≈ 3 hours
A slow morning inside the Fort, coffee on a balcony, and then the coast road north. We see you to the airport with real gratitude — for the late nights you stayed out, the quiet you kept on the beach, the way you let the island show you what it does after the lights go out. There will always be a torch waiting, and a place at the table, whenever you come back. Travel safe, and thank you.
